A mouthguard helps to prevent and minimize injury to the teeth, arches, lips, gums and brain. We recommend they be used for contact sports like football, rugby, hockey and boxing, as well as dental treatments.

For people who have braces or other orthodontic appliances, it’s particularly important to have a mouthguard that fits effectively. An injury to the mouth can harm the brackets and wires of the braces, and can cause cuts and tears to the soft tissue inside your mouth.

Custom-fitted mouthguards can also play a role in preventing concussions. When the upper and lower teeth slam together, the force of the impact is sent to the brain which can trigger a concussion.

Selecting the right mouthguard is important. When you chose a mouthguard, select one that is tear-resistant, well fitted for your mouth, and simple to clean. Also, make sure it doesn’t affect your breathing while you wear it.

Some tips for taking care of your mouthguard:

  • rinse prior to, and after, each use, or brush with a toothbrush and tooth paste
  • never leave the mouthguard in the sun or in hot water
  • transport the mouthguard in a tough container that has vents
  • clean the mouthguard in cool, soapy water and wash completely
  • look for wear and tear to see if it requires replacing
